Bigbury on Sea and Burgh Island
Bigbury on Sea, in the centre of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to Dartmoor, is a beautiful coastal village famous for its expanse of beautiful sandy beach with a causeway, flooded at high tide, leading to Burgh Island and its internationally famous Art Deco hotel. The extensive beaches of Bigbury on Sea and Bantham are ideal for children with three RNLI lifeguard stations.
The hotel, a few minutes walk from the house, was a former haunt of Edward and Mrs Simpson, Churchill and Agatha Christie and was recently voted the Most Romantic Hotel in Britain. It is open to non-residents for dinner (black tie) and Sunday lunch and is a wonderful location for that special celebration meal. The Pilchard Inn, a 700 year old smuggling inn, also on the island, serves local beers and food at lunchtime and Friday evenings.
At high tide, access to the island is via a unique long legged ‘sea tractor’ running at half hourly intervals.
The village also has two beach restaurants and the excellent Discovery Surf and Watersport school.
If the weather is poor, there is a pub/restaurant (seasonal) ten minutes walk away in Challaborough which has pool tables, darts, live Sports TV, arcade games, pub quizzes. A general store is there also.
